It's tough to be a middle manager : A study about how managers in social work experience their psykosocial environment (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how managers in social services experience their psychosocial work environment. Interviews were conducted with five managers who are closest to the operational level in three different municipalities. The collected material from the interviews was analyzed using the concepts of demands, control and social support from requirements/control/support model. The result shows that the demands on manegers are high and that the demands on managers from the bottom and from the top of the organization can be conflicting. Managers have the opportunity to influence and control their everyday work, something that is perceived to be negative in the sense that it can be hard to prioritize the tasks. The manager’s ability to influence major decisions is comprehensive for its own operations, which is less than the ability to influence and control their everyday work. The managers have support from their hierarchical superior and from senior colleagues. The results show that the support is inadequate, mainly due to lack of time.
