Muslims, Trojan horses and terror : A Rhetoric and Semiotic Analysis of Donald Trumps Statements at the 2nd Presidential Debate 2016 (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay analyses Donald Trump's statements during the second presidential candidate debate, which took place at October 9th, 2016, ahead of the presidential election on November 8th 2016, in order to establish whether or not Trump’s rhetoric includes Islamophobic tendencies. The method of this essay is a combination of semiotic and rhetoric analysis. The results of the initial analysis are combined with a theory regarding Islamophobia, to identify and explain why these tendencies in Trump’s statements can be interpreted as Islamophobic. The results of the analysis indicate that Donald Trump does express Islamophobic tendencies in his rhetoric. This is specifically apparent in his statements regarding the increase of criminality, Muslims being a burden for the American society, Muslim immigrants’ criminal acts, and lastly that Muslims are linked to acts of terror within US borders.
