The purpose of this essay is to show that the main characters in Mrs. Dalloway try to meet society’s expectations in spite of a wish to also express their true selves. I will examine how this creates a conflict within the characters and how that conflict leads to suffering and marginalization. The characters in Mrs. Dalloway have different ways of dealing with the tension between society’s expectations and their own desire for self-expression, and in my essay I suggest that this conflict constitutes the central tension of the novel, forcing the characters to find different kinds of solutions. Clarissa, Septimus and Peter are all affected by the conflict between society’s expectations and self-expression, but they find different solutions. Septimus refuses to conform to society’s expectations through ending his life, Clarissa’s solution is to conform to society’s expectations even though she desires to express her true self, and Peter’s solution is to embrace his individuality and express his true self in spite of all the negative consequences this has on his social status.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att visa hur huvudkaraktärerna i Mrs. Dalloway försöker möta samhällets förväntningar trots en önskan att även uttrycka sina sanna jag. Jag undersöker hur detta orsakar en konflikt inom karaktärerna och hur den konflikten leder till lidande och marginalisering. Karaktärerna i Mrs. Dalloway har olika sätt att hantera spänningen mellan samhällets förväntningar och sin egen längtan efter att uttrycka sig som individer, och i min uppsats föreslår jag att den konflikten utgör romanens centrala spänning, och att den tvingar karaktärerna att finna olika lösningar. Clarissa, Septimus och Peter påverkas alla av konflikten mellan samhällets förväntningar och individens uttryck, men de finner olika lösningar. Septimus vägrar anpassa sig till samhällets förväntningar genom att ta sitt liv, Clarissas lösning är att anpassa sig till samhällets förväntningar trots att hon längtar efter att uttrycka sitt sanna jag, och Peters lösning är att bejaka sin individualitet och uttrycka sitt sanna jag trots de negativa konsekvenser det innebär för hans sociala status.
