Abstract [en]

The object of this work is the problem of the large steel manufacturing we have in the world. It increases year by year and because iron ore is a finite resource, it will in the future be run out if we continue as we are doing today.

Today, about 70% of the steel production is scrap-based, the remaining 30% is ore-based, and one day when the iron ore runs out, it is required that steel production is 100% scrap-based, otherwise the resource requirements will exceed the resource assets. With the help of innovative solutions, steel products can be more efficient by reducing the resource amount. That means that the need for resources is reduced and the amount of iron ore mined can be reduced.

The study adresses the construction industry, but more so, the steel profile industry and we have explored if we can develop a pattern that replaces the traditional slitting of steel profiles.

Together with Patrick Johansson, former employee at Europrofil, today self-employed and inventor, we have adapted a pattern that has been named Railbridge. This pattern involves that in some cases it is possible to replace conventional slitting of steel profiles and to lose a dimension in thickness without compromising with the strength and the thermal conductivity properties.

The reduction of the dimension in thickness implies a decreased need of resources. The effects of this in addition to the need for resources decreases are many. For example, lower material costs, less transports, easier assembly and reduced carbon emissions. It also reduces the consumption of iron ore which is, as mentioned earlier, a finite resource.

By laboratory in Comsol Multiphysics 5.0, a FEA-based calculation software, Railbridge has been investigated and designed so the pattern is optimal for a steel profile strength and thermal conductivity properties.
