Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate students' attitudes towards speaking English in the classroom, and their self-reported experiences of what affects their use of English during lessons. Questions inquired into are students' choice to speak English or not, and the relation between the students' level of oral proficiency and their gender, age and year. 127 students at an upper secondary school attending a vocational programme participated in the study where questionnaires were handed out. Results showed that the students are well aware of the opportunities that being a good speaker in English can bring as English is a lingua franca. Students also pointed out that a friendly and informal classroom is important in order to develop the skill of speaking. The amount of spoken English during lessons reported from the students proved not to be particularly high as 42% of the students claimed that they did not speak English during their lessons. 39% of the students claimed that they spoke English "more often than not". Only 18% of the students claimed that they spoke English during every English lesson. As reported in the students' responses, reasons for this are related to insecurity and fear of failure among the students. No major differences were found related to age or year. Significant differences related to gender were found in the students' answers where girls felt less comfortable to a higher extent than boys, depending on the group size in the classroom, although both boys and girls felt less comfortable the larger the group was in the classroom.
