Vi såg orangutangs: Interference in the Speech of two Bilingual Children

Abstract [en]

An increasing number of children grow up learning more than one language from infancy. Since there are several bilingual children in each class in most Swedish schools today, knowledge of how they manage to operate two languages at the same time can be useful for teachers. In my study, I have observed two bilingual children who live in the United States with Swedish-speaking parents. The study is based on 45 minutes of recordings of the children when they speak Swedish. I transcribed their speech and focused on code- switching and interference from English. In order to compare their proficiency of Swedish to their English skills, I also calculated their Mean Length Utterance (MLU) using the model developed by Roger Brown (1973). The results show that the children are fairly comfortable using both languages, but their Swedish contains a large number of interference mistakes. The interference observed was mostly on the structural and lexical level, where directly translated word order and prepositions were the most common mistakes.
