Carl Bergsten och den turkiska arkitekturen
2001 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

Aronsson, Torbjörn (2001). Carl Bergsten och den turkiska arkitekturen. Opublicerad C-uppsats i konstvetenskap vid Karlstads universitet (2001:508). Carl Bergsten was an architect in Sweden of the early 20th century who followed international trends rather than the domestic national romanticism. He was influenced of the style wiener-jugend after a trip to Wienna in 1904. He developed this style into an expressive form. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how a trip that has attracted less attention, the one to Turkey in 1908, influenced the architecture of Bergsten. A combined business- and apartementhouse in Stockholm, built shortly before the trip, is being compared to a villa in Stocksund, built shortly after. The investigation shows that Bergsten was influenced of the more anonymous buildings of Turkey. He abandoned his expressive form of wiener-jugend for an experimental but more quiet architecture more focused on inner planning and adjusted to the surroundings. The investigation supports the opinion that Bergsten was influenced of the turkish architecture, at this time when he also created Liljevalchs konsthall, in addition to influences from international trends towards klassicism. This art museum in turn was a very influential building during the era of modernism in Sweden.
