Abstract [en]

Contradiction and distance between

Maktab and Islamic education is the core conflict in Muslim countries particularly in Afghanistan. During the war of three decades within other disputations the parents’ aptitudes towards and views on their children education become conflict phenomena in the country. In order to know some aspects of parents views, opinions, reasons for and expectations from their children’s participation in education, this study has been designed to find out parents views as regards Islamic education (Mosque and Madrasa) and Maktab education in Helmand province of Afghanistan and to find parents’ motives for Islamic education (Mosque and Madrasa), and Maktab education or both educations and to describe different aspects of girls’ and boys’ participation in both types of education.

The sampling was generally selected from 130 parents (120 fathers and 10 mothers) in Helmand province through self-completion written questionnaires. Both rural and urban areas were included in the study to see the importance of location and different educational and economic backgrounds were considered in the study to see if there are differences in their opinions.

Fathers have different expectation from education for instance, some parents expect from Islamic education that their children will become a religious leader, obedient to parents and elders and faithful, understand the basics of Islam, learn about our obligations towards Allah and they will serve for aged parents. And from Maktab education they expect that children will learn about our obligations towards others, become literate (read and write), find a good job, get a good and bright future, become a helpful person, and overcome daily life problems

There are some general expectations among parents that children will become honest personalities, serve for nations, they will become educated, and

Maktab and Islamic education have the same subjects, Islamic education complements Maktab education, both are necessary, Maktab education does not replace Islamic education.

The research comes to a number of conclusions and also recommends more research with a wider scope including participating both fathers and mothers equally with other all family members and different members of the community living around

Maktabs, Mosques and Madrasa with rural and urban variations as well as Islamic and religious people; with other secular individuals
