Abstract [sv]

Introduction.

In Nordic Countries, several community-based accident prevention studies according to a Safe Community Model, have been undertaken over the last 20 years with promising results (15-30% decreased injury rate).

The model has also been applied outside the Nordic countries without the same replication of good results. This raises questions about the principal components for success and sustainability, both about the process and the outcome in the long run, are. For example, What factors contribute to the ability of partnership to create community and system changes in the lung run?

Purpose. Based on systematically review of international scientific literature on collaborative partnership for community-based Health Promotion and Safety Promotion summaries, the factors that may have affected sustainability and maintenance of such local program will be discussed.

Method. A search of relevant literature relied on the electronic journal databases has been conducted. Key words were community participation or community mobilization in combination with public health or community networks and accident prevention/s or health promotion and evaluation studies or/and maintenance. An overview of the abstacts of just over 500 publications, published 1970 2002, was undertaken.

Results. Following this overview, strategic issues are discussed, including a summary of lessons learned. Examples of processes and activities from the literature about collaborative partnership for Community-based Safety Promotion at the local level will be presented according to 1. sustainability and maintenance of Health Promotion- or Safety Promotion program, 2. successful strategies for long-term sustainability of injury surveillance systems.

Conclusions. The overview concludes, the need for more research about public health process studies. There is also a need to integrate the evaluation of activities more closely into the process of program development.
