Schema Evolution by Means of History Support
1998 (Engelska)Rapport (Refereegranskat)
Abstract [en]

Support for schema evolution is provided in a database when schema modifications can be made without loss of the semantic content of the existing data. A feasible way to accommodate schema evolution is by history support for the schema and content of a database. Although approaches to schema evolution by means of history support have been proposed in the literature, particularly in the context of object-oriented databases, how schema evolution using historical information can be accommodated in extended relational database systems is still an important issue to be addressed.

This paper presents our approach to schema evolution using time series as the underlying temporal data model. A time series is a set of time-stamped data entries, each representing a single row of data for a particular timestamp. Supports for time series are becoming available in the commercial object-relational DBMSs. We study how metadata about schema evolution can be represented using time series, and how database queries on the evolving schemas can be handled
