The purpose of this essay is to use critical discourse analysis to answer the essay's three questions, (1) How does the Islamic State express the territoriality and identity of the Caliphate in Dabiq? (2) How does the idea of the Caliphate relate to Benedict Anderson's “Imagined Community” and finally (3 ) How can the territoriality of the caliphate be analyzed on the basis of Sack's definition of the term?To investigate this, the Islamic State's official journal, Dabiq, has been analyzed on the basis of four selected categories, khilafah, hijrah, ummah and bay’ah. Robert Sacks definition of a territory and Benedict Anderson's theory of the imagined community are two theories applied to the essay thesis in order to be theory tested and contribute to a deeper understanding. Based on this, it could be stated that the territorial and identity aspects of the caliphate are expressed through the four categories analyzed. It can also be stated that both an imagined community and a territorial aspect emerged in the analysis. It is thus neither an imagined community nor a territorial aspect but both parts.
