The ethics of the body : A text analysis in the history of ideas about desire, needs, emotions and sensations in Aristotle and Augustine (Engelska)
Abstract [en]
This is a study of the ethics of the body, with regard to Aristotle (384–322 BC) and Augustine (354–430 AD). The aim of the study is to describe, compare and, analyze their view of the human body, emotions and sensations by reading the Nikomachian ethics (350 BC) and Confessiones (397 AD). To make this comparision a hermenutic approch is used. Michel Foucault’s The use of pleasure (1984) is mainly used as a theoretical framework. The analysis is split into three parts; the ethics of the emotions, the biological body and needs/eagerness, and the ethics of the sensations. In summary, Augustine is consequently negative to the human body, senses and emotions, with a categorical and rule-based ethics of the body. In contrast, Aristotle is more discussing, tentative, ambigious and exemplifying. Both Aristotle and Augustine´s body of ethics are normative, although the motives are different. Aristotle wants to achieve eudaimonia, which is a state of serene and permanent happiness. Eudaimonia can be achieved during av lifetime. The goal of Augustine is to achieve salvation and reach the ethereal world. This is done by punishing and fighting the body, since senses and emotions deceive human beings and lead them away from God.
