Ungdomar och Internet
2000 (Svenska)Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]

The use of mass media has changed due to the rapid technological development. This thesis describes how the use of various media has changed since 1994 among people between the age of 20-24. I have analyzed if these changes might depend on the Internet. The thesis also gives a picture of how the Internet is used today and if the use of the Internet differs depending on sex, different age groups and employment categories. In order to find out how the use of various media has changed among this specific group have I looked at earlier studies. Personal interviews have also been used to find out how the group uses the Internet. The number of people in this group who watch TV, read daily- weekly- and monthly newspapers and magazines and use computers and the Internet, has increased between 1994 and 1998 according to earlier studies, while the number who reads tabloids, go to the movies, listen to CD, tape and radio has decreased. A reason to this alteration can be that the Internet has replaced some media. It is, for example, possible to download music and read newspapers on the Net. The majority of this group say that the Internet is a good tool for searching information. Everyone use the Internet to read and write e-mail and several read the newspaper and print information from the net. Many search for information for private use as well as for work and studies. A minority do their shopping, bank services, download programs and chat on the Net. The most common search engine is AltaVista, closely followed by Yahoo!. The study shows that men, highly educated people and teenagers use the Internet more than other people. Most of the people interviewed say that their use of the Internet has increased during the last years and they believe that it will increase even more. Many argues that their use of other media has not changed since they started using the Internet, although quantitative studies show that, for example, the TV watching has decreased among the Internet users. The Internet has also influenced the reading of newspapers. None of the teenagers who live on their own subscribe to a newspaper. Several of the teenagers read newspapers on the Net, although less read newspapers printed on paper.
