Our project degree is under the Department of Environmental and Energy Systems at the University of Karlstad. The field study was carried out in Chemelil, Kenya. Kenya is one of many countries suffering from highly polluted water that causes much environmental damage and many health problems. One contributor to the pollution of the water is the sugar industry. This made us motivated in examining the water systems at a sugar factory, called the Chemelil Sugar Company Ltd. To be able to analyse the water systems we studied sugar technology, after which a flow scheme was created and flows were measured. The study presents how the factory uses the water in various processes, from the point when the water enters the factory until the point at which it leaves. The whole water system is presented in a flow scheme. No closed water systems, few recycling systems and many leaks were some of the key findings that cause the low efficiency of the factory’s water systems. Data over flow measurements is also presented and it shows that a large amount of water is going to waste mainly because of poor equipment. Observations about the purifying systems show that they are working insufficient. Finally the report includes recommendations in purpose to improve the factory’s efficiency regarding the water usage. Not just in purpose to raise the sugar production but more importantly to create a sustainable environment.
