Abstract [en]

This chapter investigates how the major parties approached their Facebook campaigns in the European Parliament election of 2019. It describes the initial strategic positions of the competing parties and the background of the election, which was overshadowed by the Yellow Vest protests. By comparing the communication strategies of the parties, it theoretically focuses on the monologue versus dialogue question and finds that most parties privilege a monologue style in their use of Facebook as a campaign tool. Furthermore, the study of parties’ postings reveals interesting differences with regard to the topics the parties talk about. It is also noteworthy that the left-oriented parties address the European level more in their communications than the conservative parties.
