Abstract [en]
Japan has been actively borrowing words from other cultures for a long time but since the end of the 19th century and onwards, almost exclusively borrowed words from a language that is geographically very distant, English. Previous research, while extensive, has so far focused on written corpus and leaving spoken corpus largely unexplored. Thus, this paper investigates the English loanwords in the Japanese language with a focus on the function, amount, frequency, and form of English loans. This was achieved by lexical analysis of the transcripts of the popular Japanese reality show Terrace house we´re back in Tokyo. The findings show that around 30% of all LWs, saw changes to their form, meaning, or function. This study also concluded that 93% of every loanword used, were borrowed from English. I hoped that this study would lead to a better understanding of English loanwords that Japanese speakers, and students of Japanese are exposed to and potentially use.
