Abstract [en]

Ever since the curriculum for the nine-year compulsory school was introduced in 1962, it been a lot of discussions around what form the education shall have. All education is supposed to be carried out according to the pupils’ needs and skills, but that is not always how it looks in the classrooms. The way pupils learn and how school can be improved has been an object of heated discussions. The education should be challenging for the pupil, an active process. The monotonous teaching from the teacher’s desk was criticised at an early stage. The first curricula contain writings about how teachers can go about to stimulate the pupils’ interest of learning. But teachers haven’t always adapted the new ideas from the curricula that are passed during their career. In my study I have read different curricula and interviewed previous pupils to see weather there is an agreement between their experience and the curricula. Are the new ideas carried out to the schools and the pupils? My study will show that in most cases the ideas of the curriculum haven’t reached the pupils that I interviewed. The improvements that the curricula convey always takes a long time to be carried out in the schools. Some of the proposals from the curriculum from 1962 were not realised until the last part of the 1990s. The curriculum of 1994 according to its time; now teachers seriously let the pupils take part in their education instead of being spectators. The improvements of school and education take its time, sometimes a very long time. But we have a school for everyone, and hopefully, one day, it will be possible for pupils to create an education that suits her or him.
