Den svenska filmcensuren 1980-2004 - från kollektivt ansvarstänkande till individuellt ansvarstagande
2004 (svensk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
Abstract [en]

This is an essay about the Swedish film censorships, and thus also Statens biografbyrås progress from 1980 until 2004. The purpose of this essay has been to shed light over how Swedish film censorship has acted from 1980 until 2004, to try to understand the ideological processes that have influenced the progress during this period of time, and also how Swedish film censorship has been portrayed in printed medias. The essay has mainly been a literature study of a qualitative kind, which has been supplemented with facts from statistic and article studies. Beside the basic studies of literature, we have used information received from Statens biografbyrås official statistics over banned films and cuts in films from 1980 until 2004. Furthermore, we have examined how the debate concerning Swedish film censorship has been portrayed in certain print media during the current period of time. The conclusions we found were that film censorship increased appreciable during the 1980’s. According to us, one important factor that may have influenced to this increase, was that Sweden about the time for the introduction of the homevideo got caught up in what media studies professor Kirsten Drotner describes as a media panic. This affected both the opinion of the people in general as well as the activity of the film censorship. The number of bans and cuts decreased appreciable at the beginning of the 1990’s, and in general the Swedish film censorship has not banned or cut a film since 1996. The reasons for this was that the so called media panic revolving home video and cinema had decreased or been directed towards other, more new media, which in turn opened up for an internal ideological change of Biografbyrån, that we in fact claim it has gone through.
