På andra sidan - om internkommunikation och organisationskultur i ett kunskapsföretag
2002 (svensk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
Abstract [en]

The essay, The Other Side, discusses internal communication and organizational culture at a large knowledge based organization. The purpose of the essay is to provide a picture of the internal communication and the organization culture in the examined company, and to see if there is anything that implies that a mutual influence exists between the two. As a part of the essay research a case study is included that has taken place in an knowledge based organization with approximately 260 employees in Sweden. The company has asked to be anonymous and so the company name will therefore not be mentioned in the essay. In the essay’s case study we assume a hermeneutic perspective. By qualitative interviews with twelve respondents we interpret how they comprehend internal communication and the organization culture in the examined company. In the theory section we discuss theories about communication, in particular internal communication. Furthermore we discuss organization culture, its importance and what factors that affect it. As a complement to the theory section we also discuss contingency theory and theories on knowledge based organization. The theory section ends by linking together internal communication and organization culture. How the interviews were done and the results from them can be seen in chapter four. In the analysis that follows in chapter five the results from the interviews are analysed. In the analysis we interpret that there are some improvements that need to be made in the company when it comes to communicate goals and visions and communication during major changes within the organization. Co-workers in the examined company have bad knowledge of goals and visions, especially concerning the own activities. In the case study it can be seen how important it is that goals and visions and communication during changes is distributed the formal way and not through informal channels. In the examined company the possibility to use the positive power that lies in informal communication is complicated by the fact that the activity is divided in two buildings. Furthermore it is shown that there is a gap in the communication between different levels in the examined company. Certain information stops and there are no clear orders on which information that should be distributed in the organization. The gap between the different levels creates a closed communication. When the communication is closed it leads to a closed culture and there is a risk that the motivation is reduced. This is an example of how internal communication and the organisation culture influence each other.
