Internkommunikation - den avgörande pusselbiten - en studie av internkommunikation vid Polismyndigheten Värmland
2001 (svensk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
Abstract [en]

This is a study in media and communication. This essay contains a theoretical part which describes what good internal communication is and how it is achieved. The main part is an analysis of the internal communication at Varmland County Police Department. The part ends with some tangible proposals on how the department can change and improve their communicative work. The focus is on the formal and planned communication and which channels are used. To do an analysis of the internal communication at Varmland County Police Department we have completed a survey questionnaire with all employees at the department. The survey gave a general picture of how the employees comprehend the present situation of the internal communication. We completed that survey with five in depth-interviews which gave us a deeper understanding of different phenomena of internal communication and developed opinions. This triangulation has resulted in a deeper understanding about the internal communication at Varmland County Police Department. Varmland County Police Department has problems with its internal communication. It is unstructed and often random. The organisation lacks knowledge of how effective internal communication can be achieved. Earlier almost all information was given at the briefings every day. They ended after the reorganization and persons who used to get all information served now had to start seeking for information themselves. Several employees mention that they have a lot of information but the problem is how to sift among it. They think it is hard to find the information that is relevant for them. They also feel that they do not have enough time to seek for information. Other employees think that the new technique is difficult and complicated and because of that they do not care about the information instead. Varmland County Police Department needs to increase the awareness about internal communication. A distinct definition of the communication function and its responsibilities is necessary. It needs a distinct and formal profile so the employees know where the information comes from. The communication department should be a filter that sifts the important information and gives it to the right people. Today a lot of information is sent to all employees even though it might just concern a few. When it comes to communication channels the police department needs to decide which channel is going to be used for what and how that will be run. A final proposal is to educate the employees in why communication is important, how the different channels work and how and where they find the information they need.
