Fiction and reading strategies in elementary schools : A qualitative study about differences between a multicultural and an ethnically homogeneous class in the use of fiction and reading strategies (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how two Swedish educators in different primary schools choose fiction while teaching, how they work with fiction, which reading strategies they use while reading fiction and how the two classes differ. One of the classes is ethnically homogenous and one is multicultural. The study is based on qualitative interviews and observations which have been carried out with two educators in two different schools. The result of the study shows that the two educators regard their work with reading strategies and fiction as important and central to teaching. Although the two teachers use different reading strategies, they claim that all educators adapt the use of reading strategies depending on the group of students they have. With the help of interviews and observations, both differences and similarities were noted regarding the use and work with fiction and reading strategies in the multicultural and ethnically homogeneous class.
