Title [sv]
Avancerade nanostrukturerade material för effektiv PEM-bränsleceller
Title [en]
Advanced Nanostructured Materials for Efficient PEM fuel cells
Abstract [sv]
Our current dependence on fossil fuels as the primary energy source and carrier must eventually be superseded by a new energy-matrix that is secure, renewable and environmentally friendly. The development of suitable proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is the key component for most of the technical prospective solutions for this problem. Although significant advances have been made in this field, the high prices and scarceness of the materials to make the electrocatalysts hinder the scaling up of such technology. To overcome this barrier, a strong research agenda is still needed. It is the aim of the present proposal to contribute in this field. Through the combination of advanced experimental techniques and first-principles theory, we will investigate novel nanostructured electrocatalysts, made of cheaper and Earth abundant elements, for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (cathodic reaction) in PEMFC. This is to be achieved within a collaborative network involving researchers from Sweden and Brazil. The dissemination of the resulting theoretical-experimental insights from this systematic study will be highly beneficial for the guidance of future efforts in the field of hydrogen-economy in general and for the related Swedish infrastructure and economy in particular.
