Abstract [sv]
Projektet syftar till att öka kunskapen om inhiberingsfenomen som uppstår vid biokemisk biodrivmedelsframställning och att vidareutveckla innovativa metoder som oskadliggör de viktigaste inhibitorerna. Projektet bidrar med grundläggande kunskap om biokemiska biodrivmedelsprocesser och till industriell utveckling genom processeffektivisering.
Abstract [en]
The project focuses on biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic feedstocks to advanced biofuels through pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, and microbial fermentation. Pretreatment, although indispensable, results in formation of substances that inhibit microbes and enzymes. The project takes advantage of the recent discovery of previously unknown microbial inhibitors, viz. benzoquinones and small aliphatic aldehydes. Detoxification methods that convert the most important inhibitors of both microbes and enzymes to harmless substances will be explored. In a collaboration involving academy, industry and research institutes, techno-economic aspects and environmental impacts of new methods will be assessed. By making bioconversion more efficient through innovative new technology and by providing detailed understanding about molecular mechanisms behind inhibition phenomena, the project contributes both to industrial development and basic knowledge of the underlying processes.
