This project will use theory, modelling and experiments to develop -and reach fundamental understanding of the structure-function relationship of - novel light-weight, electronically conducting, cellulose-based composites (CBCs), suitable for a wide range of applications, including rapid recovery and purification of biologically interesting compounds and integrated energy storage in the form of high capacity batteries and supercapacitors. The properties of the new CBCs can be controlled by changing their electrochemical potential. The CBCs comprise thin layers of conducting polymers on substrates of special grades of nanostructured cellulose, and will be synthesised using a polymerisation technique, generating a conducting material with a very large specific surface area allowing a thin (15-50 nm) layer of the conducting polymer to be coated on individual fibres of different cellulose grades without impairing the unique topology of the cellulose substrate. The properties of the CBCs will be studied with a range of experimental techniques including SEM, TEM, BET, potentiometry, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The composites will be optimized experimentally for the specific end use applications using feedback from theoretical ab initio and molecular dynamic investigations. The research will combine expertise in chemistry, physics, nanotechnology and materials sciences.
