Abstract [en]

It is often difficult for users to specify requirements on interactivity in multimedia products. Users find it difficult to visualize and articulate interaction characteristics and they often play a minor role in the specification of interaction requirements. This paper reports on a new methodology for experimenting with graphical user interfaces to obtain acceptable design solutions through improved requirements specifications. The method-ology is based on an experimental technique called "Wizard of Oz". In Wizard of Oz experiments a test person is made to believe that he communicates with the computer in front of him, but actually the test manager sits in the next room interpreting the user's commands and giving the right responses. A prototyping tool using the Wizard of Oz technique for experimenting with graphical user interfaces was developed. The tool is called Ozlab and has been used to allow users to participate in the design of a new user interface in an application for hip surgery. The results show that this methodology can contribute to the articulation and specification of interaction requirements. It also demonstrates that Ozlab prototyping can promote user involvement as well as collaboration and dialogue between users and designers. Finally, Ozlab prototyping can be an arena for exploration and visualization of interaction requirements in early as well as later stages of multimedia system development
