Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the discursive position of 'goddess feminism', in relation to some of the difference- and eco feminist positions from the1960s and until today. In focus are the texts of the two goddess feminists, Monica Sjöö and Starhawk. The thesis contributes to a historiographical (re)situating of their political and religious narratives. It also contributes to an elaborated understanding of these goddess feminists and the goddess feminist discourse they are part of. The tentative feminist figuration 'the goddess identified feminist’ is articulated as a tool to discuss the religious and political discourse of goddess feminists as part of contemporary feminist and environmental political conversations and practices.

Donna Haraway’s and Karen Barad’s post humanist theoretical interventions are used to explore and discuss the affinities between goddess feminists (re)negotiation of the subject/s 'goddess/nature/human' – and the (re)negotiation of 'nature/human’ made by new materialist/post humanist difference- and eco feminists of the 2000s. Rosi Braidotti’s writings on sexual difference, becoming and feminist figurations further informs the conclusions drawn in the thesis.

Drawing on the methodological approaches of Clare Hemmings and Mieke Bal in the analysis of story-telling and subject construction, a contribution is also made, to the understanding of how story-telling as part of a discourse, produces meaning and asymmetric subject relations. In particular the thesis shows how a compassionate feminist storytelling involuntarily produces subject positions through, essentialist dualisms, hierarchical ordering and othering. In parallel, the thesis also discusses alternative narrative strategies that focus on both the discursive boarders and affinities.

Det här är en bok om två gudinnefeminister och deras religiösa och politiska berättande. Men det är lika mycket en bok om ’gudinnefeminism’ och hur denna feministiska position relaterar till, skiljer sig från och överlappar med andra skillnads- och ekofeministiska positioner från 1960-talet och till idag.

Magdalena Raivios doktorsavhandling omförhandlar historien om ’gudinne-feminism’. Den synliggör även innehållet i Monica Sjöös och Starhawks berättelser om samhället, gudinnan/naturen/människan, framtiden och revolu-tionen. Här visas hur problematiska generaliseringar och uppdelningar i ”vi” och ”de andra” skapas i berättandet – men att Sjöö och Starhawk även vidgar och omförhandlar innebörden av begrepp som ’kvinna’ och ’natur’. En feministisk figuration kallad ’den gudinneidentifierade feministen’ används som tentativ utgångspunkt för nutida samtal om feministiska och miljöpolitiska visioner och för-ändringsstrategier.

Avhandlingens resultat styrker tidigare forskning som visat att ett ”feministiskt medkännande berättande” – trots sin välmenta ambition – ofrivilligt medverkar i skapandet av diskursiva gränser, hierarkier och generaliseringar. Som ett teoretiskt bidrag, formuleras och diskuteras här några skillnadsfeministiska ansatser till alternativa berättandestrategier.

Abstract [en]

Many spiritual feminists work with interrupting the idea of a sharp distinction between the spiritual and the material, the religious and the secular, as well as the one between woman and man and female and male. The feminists whose thoughts I previously work with in my ongoing dissertation are not in the first place spiritual feminists, but rather materialist, postcolonial ecofeminists with a holistic (combined spiritual and materialist) worldview. Kaarina Kailo, a Finnish scholar, argues for the importance of making an ideological shift from the Master Imaginary to a Gift Imaginary to promote an ecological and social sustainable society, not based on women and indigenous people as the Other. Kailo looks upon spirituality as an integral and internal part of nature and society and as a basic aspect of human life. Together with more commonly used feminist political strategies, Kailo suggests spirituality, indigenous rituals and myths as important sources for empowering women and non-hegemonic men, and for deconstructing the master narratives and patriarchal structures and practices of western society. After a brief outlining of Kailo's thoughts, I would like to discuss her view of religion, and her feminist theory of a Gift Imaginary, to help me sharpening my analysis.

Artikeln analyserar målningen "God Giving Birth" föreställande en födande kvinna, målad av Monica Sjöö. De genusrelaterade problemen med en gynocentrisk metafor för skapelse i en religiös ekofeministisk kontext diskuteras. Genom att använda en särskild metod för kritisk bildtolkning och genom att se målningen som en del i ett post- modernt projekt där utmaningen av universella världsbilder och en re-sakralisering av "det kvinnliga" och av naturen står i centrum, menar jag att det trots de möjliga problem kan vara fruktbart att se den födande kvinnan i målningen, och målningen i sig som metafor för skapelse och förändring

I detta paper lyfter författaren frågor kring teorier, metoder och erfarenhet av tvärvetenskap i feministisk religionsvetenskaplig forskning. Detta görs utifrån aktuell svensk och internationell litteratur inom området samt med exempel från erfarenheter vid Centrum för genusforskning vid Karlstads universitet. Papret inleds med att några grundläggande begrepp och viktiga vägval tas upp, och går sedan in på frågan om vilka möjligheter som kan tänkas öppna sig genom nya tvärvetenskapliga samarbeten. Avslutningsvis ges exempel på både mång- och tvärvetenskapliga samarbeten på Centrum för Genusforskning vid Karlstads universitet

Abstract [en]

In what ways does physical gender relate to the process of interpretation according to feminist theory? This paper aims to discuss this feminist theoretical question in relation to my own master thesis, as an example of how this might be dealt with (or not) within feminist thealogy.



By using the concept physical gender, as suggested by Swedish feminist theologian Anne-Louise Eriksson, as an alternative to talking about sex or gender, and by relating this to how Judith Butler, in her alternative for the concept social construction, uses the concept materialized body, the complexity of the question of feminist theoretical starting points is addressed.



In my feminist thealogical reading of the motif of Mary in the last of the songs of the Finnish national epos The Kalevala, I take my own physical gender, as a woman, as one of the starting points of a textually and contextually based interpretation. But, as the concept physical gender in itself implies, there is according to feminist theory of today, no simple way of answering in what way and how, physical gender may be a relevant category in discussing the assumptions of the act of theological or ideological interpretation.



Which are the important questions in a discussion of feminist hermeneutics and contextual relevance regarding physical gender? When does physical gender seem to be a liberating starting point in this matter, and when does it not?



The questions addressed in this paper is also the focus of my ongoing, recently started doctoral thesis, where I mean to study how ecofeminist thealogians in particular, deal with the problems that may rise when taking the physical gender implicit or explicit as starting point for a thealogical interpretation.
