Abstract [en]

Chromium martensitic hot-work tool steel (AISI H13) was developed to endure the severe conditions of high temperature metal forming operations such as die casting, hot rolling, extrusion and hot forging. The mechanical properties are high and strongly connected to the microstructure and have been improved over the years by alloying and heat treatment. Damages still occur and one of the most common failure mechanisms is thermal fatigue.



In this thesis the thermal fatigue damage on hot forming tools has been studied. Several types of hot work tools steels have been experimentally tested and the microstructural changes during thermal fatigue have been evaluated. The tool material behaviour has also been simulated to support the integration of die design, tool steel properties and use.



The general aim of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of the chromium martensitic hot-work tool steel damage, performance and microstructure.

Abstract [en]

Tool steels are used to form, shape and cut other materials and require a wide range of demanding properties. Generally the strength is high which places the steel in the ultra high strength category. One type of tool steel is hot work tool steel, designed for high temperature applications. High temperature can change the microstructure in a steel, and since the microstructure, generally, is responsible for a materials properties, it is important for a steel to have a high temperature stable microstructure to maintain its properties. There are many properties, which must be considered, and also, various microstructural effects, when designing a tool for high temperature work. Even if the dies have been improved over the years, they still fail due to different damage mechanisms, where the microstructure also plays an important role.



The objective of the present study is to increase the knowledge on the microstructural influence on materials properties and damage mechanisms

Abstract [en]

A lot of our everyday products, e.g. car-parts and mobile phone covers, are shaped by using high temperature techniques, such as die casting, extrusion, forging or rolling. The die in all these forming processes play an important role, since it usually gives the object its final shape. The service-time of a die is essential, because the die is usually very complex and expensive. If the service-time could be increased then the production costs would be lowered.



The present study aims at increasing the service-time of hot work tool steels, by increasing the knowledge in dominant damage mechanisms and important material properties.



The cyclic behaviour and damage in martensitic chromium hot work tool steels, at four different heat treatment conditions, were investigated by isothermal and thermal fatigue testing. A kinematic and isotropic hardening model was used to model the material behaviour.
