Abstract [en]

This volume collects 14 studies that approach conventional notions of fact and fiction from a wide variety of vantage points. The contributions run the gamut of fields as diverse as language history, syntax, corpus linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, and terminology. Along the way, a few myths are shattered, and new light is shed on some facts and fictions of language. This festschrift is dedicated to Professor Solveig Granath

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Hur har IT påverkat lärandeprocesser i språk?

Abstract [en]

This anthology reflects the current interest in the concept of space as a revitalising approach to literary, social, mental, political and discursive phenomena. The contributions, which examine novels, films, art, and cultures, invite the reader to consider the function of space in human constructions as symbolic representation, analytical tool, discursive strategy and haunting effect. In a wider context they demonstrate the extent to which spatiality impacts on our lives and has ethical, political, historical and cultural implications. The contributors represent a wide range of disciplines in the Humanties: Literature, Photography, Art, Human Geography, Ethnic Studies, and Cultural Studies.Maria Holmgren Troy and Elisabeth Wennö are Associate Professors in English Literature at Karlstad University, Sweden

Abstract [en]

It is a commonplace in criticism to see irony and coincidence as pervading features of Thomas Hardy's novels. Fate, circumstance, and disillusionment in the face of life's ironies are embedded in his narratives. The same can be said about Beryl Bainbridge's novels, and it is surprising that this similarity in philosophical vision and mode of narration has never been noted in the attempts made to place Bainbridge in the English literary tradition. Although different in style, Hardyand Bainbridge convey the same sense of determinism and frustration of expectationsas well as sympathy with human shortcomings and the resilience of the individualat the mercy of impersonal forces.
